Khos Duzi consists of sewing thin strips of Khos or Naqdeh on fine and delicate lace fabrics.

The bands are arranged to form geometric, cursive, arabesque, “Danehee” and “Kheshti Payeh Boland” designs and patterns. In addition to lace fabrics, Khos Duzi is also applied to velvet.

To apply the stitches to the velvet, a kind of needle called a “caterpillar” is used. The history of Khos Duzi is not known to us, but it is certain that this craft was very popular in Bandar Abbas and Baluchestan during the Safavid dynasty.

After the Safavids, efforts were made to revalorize this embroidery which led its products to reach their most beautiful forms.

Khos Duzi is mainly used to decorate lace curtains, lace scarves (Jalbil) and lace chadors (usually in black), wedding dress, scarves, Holy Quran cover, pants, bedding, cushion covers, headwear, dresses, vests for women and much more.

The most used patterns in Khos Duzi are hexagonal, octagonal and dodecagonal stars. Others include “Noh Khesht”, “Kandoo Asal” or honey comb, “Shesh Ghalb” or six hearts, “Khesht Dar Khesht”, little stars, “Hashieh Barg Anjiri”, “Ghalbi Khali”, “Tak Duzi”, “Por Duzi”, “Gushvareh”, “Naghsh e Gol” or flower, “Gol e Ferferei”, crab or “Kakalehe”, butterfly, scorpion, bowl, peacock, “Hashieh Ghalbi” and “Hashieh Chashm e Gav”.

Since the patterns are very simple in this craft, it is not necessary to draw them on the fabric and the needleman makes the stitches according to his own taste. The front and back of the fabric look the same and are particularly shiny. This is where the work is done delicately and neatly, so that the pattern is created on both sides of the fabric.

The threads used in Khos Duzi are gold or silver and are known as Khos threads. This is the reason why this handicraft is known as “Khos Duzi” which means “khos sewing”. Occasionally, artists from this region combine Khos Duzi with other crafts such as Golabatoon and sequins and create unique products.

SAN LUIS – The festive season begins in San Luis with the Colcha Embroidery Bazaar and Festive Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 2.

The San Luis Colcha Embroidery Group, after a long absence, is hosting the event in the part of the Cultural Center that houses the Adelante County and Costilla Economic Development Center organizations.

Marcella Pacheco, a member of the San Luis Colcha Embroidery Group, said the group started in 2017 when a group of women from Albuquerque and Taos, NM gave a workshop on colcha embroidery.

Colcha embroidery is a tradition in northern New Mexico using the thread of a particular sheep, called the Churro sheep. Knitters in New Mexico and southern Colorado use a simple repeating stitch. A woman came from Peru several years ago and showed different stitches using 3-ply yarn, and pieces of colcha are also made this way.

Since 2017, many members have passed away. The remaining members are meeting again and hoping to revive colcha embroidery by holding a holiday market and bazaar showcasing and selling colcha pieces, as well as other items.

Pacheco said meeting with the San Luis Colcha embroidery group is a way “to build friendships, exchange ideas and colors. Focusing on colors and embroidery brings meditation and relaxation.”

There is a strong interest in colcha embroidery in Saguache, and after a four-week event there last June, there has been a collaboration between the two groups.

San Luis now draws its lead from Saguache instead of Denver. Samples of Saguache colcha embroidery will be at the San Luis Holiday Market and Bazaar on December 2.

Carlos Atencio works with wood and will sell rosaries. Matthew Sandoval sells miniature Catholic crosses. Maria Barela will have colcha collectibles and other trinkets. Pacheco will have colcha embroideries, as well as honey and blank greeting cards. Here are some of the homemade items available at the Colcha Embroidery Bazaar and Festive Market on December 2 in San Luis.

Murder convict Manoj, 30, incarcerated in the district jail here, scored 84% on his Class 10 exam and is preparing to improve that score in Class 12.

Sentenced to death by a lower court in 2014 for the murder of a six-year-old child, the upbringing has given him some semblance of normalcy in the otherwise bleak prison scenario.

Studies have also given Manoj a slim hope that the higher court might show him mercy, prison superintendent Mijaji Lal said.

“He is disturbed by the murderer tag attached to his name and wants to erase it through studies and gain a new identity for himself,” Lal told PTI.

Of the 1,500 detainees, including 58 women, more than 250 study regularly. Six inmates are taking degree courses through the Indira Gandhi National Open University to earn a living once they return to society.

For many inmates, being locked up in the prison gave them a chance to learn to read and write, something they had never thought of in the outside world.

Not only education, the district prison authorities have organized yoga classes for inmates, Ayurvedic herbs are grown on site to treat minor ailments while inmates are trained in the famous zardozi embroidery work of Shahjahanpur.

There is a concerted effort for the illiterate to learn to read and write. About 100 inmates have achieved this goal while another 100 are studying from class 5 to class 10.

Lal said classes are held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for which a teacher from the Department of Basic Education has been made available at his request.

Nirupama Mahant, the principal of the public school who is imprisoned for a money transaction problem, helps female prisoners with their studies. Kamaraj Arya, who is serving a life sentence for murder, lends a hand in this task. Himself M.Sc B.Ed, he teaches inmates up to intermediate grades.

About training inmates in embroidery work, Lal said that once they learn the intricacies, the women can start earning money from their work.

The prison superintendent has about 50 other prisoners, both male and female, who are involved in sewing and embroidery work and earn Rs 40 a day.

Komal (25) is serving a life sentence for murder while her husband is being held in Bareilly prison. She earns Rs 1,200 a month from sewing in prison.

Another prisoner Raman (27), serving a life sentence for the murder of her husband, beamed with joy when she got the chance to put tilak on the prison superintendent, this ‘Bhai Dooj’ .

”I gave him sweets and put tilak on his forehead. He gave me a new suit as a present,’ she said, showing off her new suit.

PRACTICE WITH A NEEDLE — Michelle Baylis and Mari Bangs, members of the Channel Islands chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, hold examples of their artwork in Bangs’ home on Oct. 3. Photos by RICHARD GILLARD/Acorn Newspapers

Ask Michelle Baylis to choose her most meaningful embroidery work, and her answer will always be the same: a one-of-a-kind seascape dedicated to her late sister, who loved needlework and strolling along the beach.

The co-president of the Channel Islands chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America is committed to keeping the art of embroidery alive in Ventura County as the organization approaches its 40th anniversary.

“I want others to know that we’re here and we’re a dynamic group,” Baylis said.

She and member Mari Bangs, both residents of Camarillo, joined the chapter after retiring about four years ago in order to surround themselves with people who share their passion for embroidery.

“You get a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips by joining,” said Bangs, who joked that she had enough pieces to fill a museum.

Each workshop introduces them to new techniques beyond traditional cross stitch, including kumihimo weaving and Norwegian hardanger.

“Every time we get together, I learn something,” Baylis said.

Hours of embroidery alongside other members have shown Bangs the value of making a design her own rather than simply copying it – a form of self-expression she finds relaxing.

“It can be very meditative,” she said. “And at the end you have a beautiful work of art.”

Despite the benefits of embroidery, membership in both the national guild and the local chapter has declined over the years.

Since its inception in 1983, the Channel Islands chapter has grown from hundreds of members to 35. Baylis and Bangs said members are aging and management teams are struggling to attract younger members.

“We’re trying to do more outreach,” Baylis said.

After two years of inactivity due to the pandemic, the chapter has made an effort to organize more community activities, including an open house on Wednesday, October 26.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Camarillo United Methodist Church, 291 Anacapa Drive.

“We welcome young and old alike,” Baylis said. “We welcome an exchange of ideas.”

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (TENNESSEE VALLEY LIVING) — Born and raised in the South, Natalie Chanin is a nationally known fashion designer.

Chanin was born in Florence, Alabama and spent many years moving along the country’s east coast. She graduated from North Carolina State University where she studied environmental design. After years of working with different garments, textiles and studying where they come from, her creative mind and eye for design landed her a job as a fashion designer in New York.

After years of drawing, sewing, and researching the perfect materials for her designs, she realized that her home in northern Alabama offered some of the best raw materials for clothing.

It wasn’t long before she launched “Project Alabama” with a mission to create the perfect everyday t-shirt. Eventually, this project morphed into Alabama Chanin, a clothing brand focused on sustainable fashion in the heart of Florence.

Chanin shares her stories and design secrets in her new book, “Embroidery: Threads and Stories from Alabama Chanin and The School of Making.”

One look and you can tell the big, coffee table-worthy book is from a designer. The sweet pages and beautiful images tell the story of Chanin’s upbringing in the south and how it helped her shape her future. He blends sewing, design and embroidery lessons with his personal story and traces the evolution of Alabama Chanin and how it became one of the leading sustainable fashion houses in the United States.

The book comes out October 18 and is available at abramsbooks.com.

Tatreez embroidery is an ancient and enduring symbol of Palestinian culture and identity. In the Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon, a group of Palestinian women are carrying on this tradition by teaching a new cohort of practitioners this age-old art.

The faint beep of the tuktuk, children playing, and distant construction work seeping into the room through the slightly ajar door.

There is a slight murmur among the women, who all indulge in coffee and cake to celebrate a joyous occasion. A photographer named Mohamed takes a portrait of a young woman named Farah who smiles into the lens.

Others begin to make their way to the cushions on the floor in the corner, being greeted personally by Aziza who motions them to make themselves comfortable.

They all find a place before being addressed by another lady, Manar, who gives an introductory speech on the importance of this meeting today and thus opens the very first workshop for Palestinian women Tatreez of the camp of refugees from Shatila.

“Frankly, it’s a love story. Between the string and the needle. Before, I found it strange that women waited a long time to make Tatreez. But now, I understand”

Tatreez is the Arabic word for a form of cross-stitch embroidery, unique to Palestine, and a cornerstone of its culture for millennia.

The craftsmanship revolves around sewing different colored cords onto pieces of fabric, creating innovative patterns and designs, all of which have strong symbolism and tell stories about their history and heritage.

“Quite frankly, it’s a love story. Between the string and the needle. I used to find it strange how women would sit patiently for a long time doing Tatreez. But now I understand,” says Aziza, the women’s embroidery teacher. The New Arab.

As well as being an art form, over the course of history Tatreez has become a form of resistance. The Nakba – the Palestinian catastrophe of 1948, which led to the expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland – was the sole reason for the establishment of the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon, and it is at the heart of this camp that this workshop was taking place.

“Through this Tatreez project, I feel like I’m doing this to serve the Palestinian cause, and how can I serve it? By preserving our cultural traditions, because Israel’s goal is to erase Palestine and everything Palestinian from the world,” explains Manar, the project organizer.

Denied the right to return to their ancestral homeland, a right that is still denied to millions of Palestinian refugees around the world, the women retained their identity thanks to Tatreez.

“Through this Tatreez project, I feel like I’m doing this to serve the Palestinian cause…because Israel’s goal is to erase Palestine and everything Palestinian from the world”

Each region of the country had a specific design or pattern, each quite distinct from the others. It is this imagery that has since become immediately recognizable to many around the world as Palestinian.

After months of preparation, the seeds of a great initiative have been planted, empowering women and giving them the opportunity to earn a living for their families.

The workshop not only serves as a space for business, but has been opened up to women as a safe haven and a place for community, where they can enjoy each other’s company and support each other morally and emotionally.

Manar emphasizes the importance of space holistically for women. “It is also a safe space for all women. This is the most important thing.

Farah, one of the aspiring embroiderers says, “Although it’s my first time, I feel like we’ve known each other for a long time. We hope that more people see what we are doing and that this project gains more and more support over time and can continue. We want our voice and our skills to reach many more people so that we can achieve our goals. »

From my own point of view, the most beautiful thing about the workshop and the camp was the unity between Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese.

The Shatila refugee camp was established solely for Palestinians after 1948, but since the start of the Syrian civil war there has been a large influx of Syrian refugees who now inhabit the camp, alongside some Palestinians who are the fourth generation to be born there.

“What I like about Shatila is that there is no difference between a Palestinian, a Syrian or a Lebanese. We are all one heart and one family,” says Izdihar, another future embroiderer and Syrian refugee.

“What I like about Shatila is that there is no difference between a Palestinian, a Syrian or a Lebanese. We are all one heart and one family”

For her, the workshop is particularly important socially and gives her the freedom she has been looking for for so long. “I never used to leave the house. I always spent my time at home. Here I have no one at all except them. They are all my sisters. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to be involved in this.

As the session continues, each woman begins their Tatreez journey with a single piece of fabric, and they are asked to use green twine and practice the straight line embroidery technique. They giggle and laugh with each other as they trial and error, some being more naturally attuned to a needle than others. I am asked to be a judge between the straight green lines of three women, and which is the most beautiful, to which I reply that there is beauty in each.

Manar watches as a proud mother to the young women, seeing all their hard work come to fruition.

She is excited about the future of the project and what can be achieved. “We hope to reach a stage where we finish teaching Tatreez and training and then start working and selling. For every woman to earn an income from her own hard work.

The dream is for the workshop to be completely self-sufficient and for the parts sold to cover the costs of electricity, internet and other expenses, as well as providing a salary for women who would otherwise struggle to find employment.

“I thank everyone who supported this project, brought smiles to our faces and gave us hope for the future. We hope to have more support to continue this project,” concludes Manar.

It was a heartwarming experience to witness the birth of such a beautiful project, hopefully the future will provide additional support to enable the Shatila Tatreez refugee camp workshop to continue.

IRVING PARK — An artist who specializes in creating custom designs using a vintage embroidery machine has moved her studio and boutique to Irving Park.

Vichcraft owner Jenna Blazevich’s Cornely A crank-and-wheel chainstitch machine is just over 100 years old, but it still performs well for her customers’ sewing needs. When creating a custom design, Blazevich directs freehand needle direction on pennants, shirts, and other items.

“If you imagine a mechanic shirt or a bowling shirt, they would have been customized with this type of machine,” Blazevich said. “It’s a really special, very rare machine.”

Blazevich moved his business to 3757 N. Kedzie Ave. last year and started seeing clients by appointment this summer. Starting Oct. 30, she plans to open the store from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays or customers can book appointments online.

The crank and wheel by Jenna Blazevich, owner of Vichcraft, Cornely A chainstitch machine is just over 100 years old and when creating custom designs.

Blazevich loved to draw as a child. When she got to college, she first studied fashion before focusing on graphic design, she said. She is also interested in printmaking and lettering, she said.

Blazevich started her business in 2015 and was previously based in an artists’ collective in Humboldt Park and later in a studio in the Ukrainian village.

“It’s always been my interest to create my own clothes and to be able to put ideas into a portable format,” Blazevich said. “And there is a rich history of textile arts in my family. My great-great-grandmother was very good at hand embroidery, which I think is really cool.

In 2020, Blazevich’s studio lease expired; due to the pandemic disruptions, she decided to start working from home.

Last year, Blazevich and her husband moved into Irving Park, and she noticed the Kedzie Avenue storefront was vacant.

Blazevich decided to move his shop to the Kedzie spot. She and her husband have spent the last year “wearing themselves out” renovating the old Vichcraft tattoo studio and preparing to open to the public, she said.

Besides custom chain stitch designs, Blazevich creates stained glass designs and designs logos for clients, she said. She also has her own line of prints which she sells through her website and storefront.

“Most of it comes down to working with personalized lettering, taking a phrase or word and sprucing it up, making it interesting in whatever medium I’m using,” Blazevich said. “I do a lot of events…all over town where a company like Madewell, J Crew or something has had me come in and do customization on the things they sell.”

Blazevich’s friend gilded the store window with the Vichcraft logo. Blazevich and her husband also placed the Honda motorcycle they built together in 2017 as the main display behind the front glass.

“It was so fun doing it because there’s this ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ inspired illustration on the gas tank, and we did a tank badge that says Vichcraft instead of Honda,” he said. she declared.

Blazevich’s previous locations would host workshops open to the public focused on font design or motorcycle maintenance, and Blazevich hopes to bring those events back to his new location next year.

“I’m thrilled that there’s now a catch-all day on Sundays where people can come in and get their stuff stitched up,” Blazevich said.
