Asahi Kasei to launch airbag sewing operations in Vietnam

Japanese technology group Asahi Kasei will launch the airbag fabric sewing operation at its Vietnamese subsidiary Asahi Kasei Advance Vietnam in 2020. With this investment, the technology group is entering the next step in the airbag industry value chain .

The capacity will be gradually increased to 2.5 million pieces per year until 2022, followed by a second increase to 5 million pieces per year in the coming years.

The Asahi Kasei Group supplies airbag manufacturers with threads in Leona PA 66 filament and invested in a weaver who manufactures airbag fabric. The entry into the airbag fabric sewing business marks an expansion of Asahi Kasei’s airbag-related business and an acceleration in the value chain.

Vehicle airbags are a major application of the Leona PA 66 filament, and continued growth is expected as vehicle production increases in Asia. At the same time, the number of airbags per vehicle is increasing – safety requirements becoming increasingly stringent around the world. In addition, it is expected that with the advancement of CASE (Connected – Autonomous – Shared – Electric) megatrends and the associated transformation of vehicle interiors, airbag design will undergo a lasting change.
