Gallery - Basic Necessities - 2002
|
For a Quiltfest 2002 traveling exhibit APNQ chose the theme of "Basic Necessities," and invited 51 members to create quilts that showcased individual artistic expression while providing an exhibition to excite viewers about contemporary quiltmaking. Participants were asked, "What is essential in your life? What nourishes your mind, body or soul? What is it that you cannot fathom living without? What to you is a 'basic necessity?'" Images ranged from current Northwest subjects to essential everyday objects. The quiltmakers for this invitational exhibition were randomly selected based only on membership in APNQ; no jurying was done. Artistic expressions and construction techniques of unlimited variety were encouraged within the size limitation of 24 inches by 36 inches (61cm x 91.5cm). Techniques include selective cutting, elaborate piecing, embellishment, exquisite hand quilting, hand-dyed fabrics, machine quilting with decorative threads, photographic transfer and three-dimensional appliqué. This collection, coordinated and curated by APNQ members Jill Christenson and Anne Ryan, has toured museums, quilt shows and art centers throughout the United States to rave reviews. Auctioned off at Quiltfest 2002 to benefit APNQ. Photos by Mark Frey. |
